From the moment we first toured the Hill House it was obvious…there had to be a better way to layout the upstairs bathroom. It was cute with pink striped wallpaper, two wall-mounted sinks and matching medicine cabinets, but the whole thing felt like it had just been plunked down in the middle of the floor plan. No exterior wall for a window. An angled hallway wall. And 4’ of leftover space in Daphne’s bedroom, making for a long, narrow, clunky closet. The whole thing was really awkward. We knew we could put this bathroom and underutilized closet space to better use. We just weren’t quite sure how.

How it used to be

At some point after the Hill Houses’ construction in 1910, a wall mounted sink was added to what looks like a large open bedroom on the east half of the upstairs. A comfortable spot for out of town relatives and friends? Fun to imagine what it was like up there with the floral wallpaper, sink, and wood floors.

The 60s remodel

Then in the 60’s a more significant remodel added the full pink bathroom in the same spot as the single sink. During demo we found the old sink outline about where the tp holder is in the photo below.

Here’s what the pink bathroom looked like in floor plan.
